Most diacritics concern pronunciation because most alphabets do not describe the sounds of words exactly. Diacritics are rare in English, but common in many other languages.
Some diacritics, such as the acute ⟨á⟩, grave ⟨à⟩, and circumflex ⟨â⟩ (all shown above an 'a'), are often called accents. Diacritics may appear above or below a letter or in some other position such as within the letter or between two letters.

A diacritic is a mark put above, below, through or on a letter. Some examples of diacritics are an acute accent or a grave accent. The word comes from the Greek word διακριτικός ( transl. diakritikós, 'distinguishing'). Usually, it affects the way the word is said (pronounced).
It consists of a two dots diacritic ( ◌̈) placed over a letter, generally a vowel; when that letter is an ⟨i⟩, the diacritic replaces the tittle: ⟨ï⟩. The diaeresis diacritic indicates that two adjoining letters that would normally form a digraph and be pronounced as one sound, are instead to be read as separate vowels in two syllables.
