    John Locke (1632-1704) was an English philosopher responsible for laying the foundation of the European Enlightenment. His work had a lasting influence on political philosophy, beginning with the Enlightenment thinkers, who further developed Locke's ideas on the limits of state power and individual liberty based on a new vision of human nature and knowledge acquisition.
